Reducing emissions from ocean freight is one of the key challenges facing the maritime industry. At the same time, many companies are looking for practical ways to reduce the climate impact of their own supply chains today.
With Maritime Biofuel Insets, Greencarrier Consolidators makes it possible to reduce fossil CO₂ emissions from LCL shipments in a simple and transparent way. The solution is designed for consolidated cargo, where several customers share container space, making verified emission reductions accessible also for smaller shipment volumes.
The video below shows an example of a 1,000 kg LCL shipment with estimated emissions of 100 kg CO₂, where the corresponding fossil CO₂ emissions can be reduced by 100% through Maritime Biofuel Insets.
How the LCL pricing model works
For LCL shipments, the pricing model is based on the CO₂ emissions connected to the transport. In the example shown in the video, a 1,000 kg shipment corresponding to 100 kg CO₂ can be reduced by 100% through Maritime Biofuel Insets at a price of €15.
This means the price is directly connected to the climate effect, making the model easy to understand and communicate.
What effect does it have?
The solution works through a mass-balance principle, similar to how green electricity works. Renewable fuel is added into the maritime fuel system, and the corresponding emission reductions are allocated to the customer’s shipment.
The biofuel may not be used on the exact vessel carrying that specific shipment, but the overall use of renewable fuel in maritime transport increases. Each booking is documented with proof of the fuel allocation and an independently verified certificate showing the CO₂ reduction achieved through the fuel switch.
In this way, Maritime Biofuel Insets make it possible for companies to reduce transport-related Scope 3 emissions from LCL freight while supporting the broader transition towards fossil-free maritime transport.
